Product Spotlight: Avocado Green Crib Mattress

Should I get an organic crib mattress? Should I add it to my baby registry? BabyProductsMom gets those questions a lot. The answer depends, of course, on your situation.

Consider an organic crib mattress if:

  • It’s in your budget. Organic/ eco-friendly crib mattresses tend to be pricier.
  • You’re a planet parent and sustainability is top of mind.
  • You want something a little cozier in your baby’s crib that’s still firm enough to constitute a safe sleeping environment.

If you answered yes to at least one of these statements, check out the Avocado Green Mattress.

Inside story: Avocado Green crib mattresses, handmade in Los Angeles, aren’t made from avocados. But they are filled with good stuff, including dense GOTS organic certified cotton and wool and GOLS organic certified latex. The mattress components are sustainably sourced from farms in India owned by the company’s founders, Jeff D’Andrea and his wife, Alex.

Founded in 2016, Avocado Green Mattress is on a mission to be the most respected source for green mattresses at affordable prices, while maintaining environmentally conscious, ethical and sustainable business practices to help safeguard your baby’s health and protect the planet. The organic crib mattress is “carbon negative” all the way from the D’Andrea’s farms in India to the factory in Fullerton, California, and shipping to your home.

The Certified B corporation is a new kind of business that balanced purpose and profit. As members of 1% for the Planet, the D’Andreas donate 1% of all revenue to environmental non-profits.

Avocado Green Crib Mattress Key Features

Avocado green crib mattress--ecofriendly crib mattress

Infant side and toddler side

Avocado Green crib mattresses feature a firmer side for infants and a slightly cushier side for toddlers. But if you don’t bother to ever flip the mattress (wait until your baby’s first birthday), don’t worry. Most babies get used to sleeping on anything after a day or two. Still, a dual firmness mattress is designed to go the distance, which is a plus if you’re planning to turn your baby’s crib into a toddler bed.

Cloth cover

Avocado Green crib mattresses have a cloth cover, so you won’t hear that squeaky vinyl sound when your baby rolls over. The downside? Cloth covers won’t stop diaper leaks from soaking into the mattress (a breeding ground for bacteria) unless they have a waterproof layer, typically made of coated polyurethane plastic. With this organic crib mattress mattress, you’ll need a waterproof mattress pad for sure. A basic one like this will get the job done.

Greenguard Gold Certification

Avocado Green crib mattresses are Greenguard Gold certified so you can be assured that it doesn’t contain any toxic, off-gassing chemicals, and MADE SAFE certified non-toxic.

Snug fit

Avocado Green mattress offers a tight fit, with no gaps between the edges of the mattress and the frame of the crib.

Crib Mattress Shopping Tips

Do the squeeze test. Buying an organic crib mattress–or any kind of crib mattress–is kinda like buying an avocado. You’ll want to give it the squeeze test. If you’re buying in the store or at home after your online crib mattress has arrived, press on the center of the crib mattress from either side with both hands. You shouldn’t be able to press the mattress in much at all.

Overall, you’ll want to select the firmest mattress you can afford because a firm mattress is the the safest sleep surface for your baby.

Think soft brick! What may seem too hard for you isn’t too hard for your baby to sleep on.

Don’t skimp on a mattress. Many crib shoppers don’t think the mattress is all that important and discount this purchase. If you’re like them, you might spend hours selecting the crib, then whizz through the crib mattress section and buy the least crib mattress they can find. That’s not necessarily a safe move because crib mattresses at the lowest price point ($100) can be mushy, and therefore not a safe sleep surface for your baby.

Squeeze Test in Action

BabyProductsMom gave three crib mattresses from her mattress stash the squeeze test.

Squeeze test–too soft! This mattress was around $50, which is too low budget.

Avocado Green–some give but still firm. I’m pressing super hard.

Colgate traditional foam mattress–super firm. It’s not “eco-friendly” but all Colgate mattresses are Greenguard Gold certified, so that’s a plus. No off-gassing to worry about.

Verdict: Overall, the Avocado Green crib mattress does have more give than a traditional foam crib mattress, but it’s still firm.
If you’re in the market for an organic crib mattress, the Avocado Green crib mattress is a great way to be good to the planet and cozy up your nursery.

In addition to the Avocado Green crib mattress, which retails for around $279, another organic crib mattress BabyProductsMom has used and loves is the Colgate Eco Classica III.
