Eco-Friendly Baby Gift and Picks

fall forest--eco-friendly baby giftsWant to green up your act?

Put products on your baby registry/get list that have a positive environmental impact. Like baby products in general, “green” baby gear is a growing category. There’s a lot to choose from.

To help you wade through it all, here are 9 select eco-friendly product picks to put on your “good-for-the-environment” radar.

Clek car seats are eco-friendly because they’re 100% recyclable

After your child has outgrown a Clek car seat, just package it up and order a shipping label here. It’ll cost you $39.99 per seat to recycle any Clek car seat. But you’ll get it back. Clek will email you a personal discount code in the same value, which can be used on their website towards a future purchase.

Bugaboo takes sustainability seriously

Up to 80% of the Bugaboo Ant is recyclable. Great for travel, the Bugaboo Ant fits in the overhead compartment. That means you can stroll right up to the gate and hit the ground strolling when you land.

If you like of the Bugaboo’s recyclability, check out Bumbleride Indie strollers. They’re made with 100 percent recycled PET fabric, using dye processes that conserve water. Their stroller fabrics are free of PVC, BPA, phthalates, fire retardants and polyurethane foam.

Bugaboo and Bumbleride strollers are made to last as well, too. Consider: The average parent with only one child owns four strollers! If you’ve got two kiddos, you’ll go through 6.4 strollers in your stroller career. (Don’t ya just love statistics!) But one Bugaboo or Bumbleride may be all you need. The maximum child weight capacity on the Bugaboo Ant is 50 pounds; on the Bumbleride, it’s 55 pounds. That’ll you get to around age 5 or 6, or so.

Greentom strollers really go the green distance

If you like the idea of strollers with recycled PET bottle fabric, but want even more, a Greentom stroller might just be for you. Not only is the stroller fabric made from recycled plastic, so is the stroller frame (technically, it’s made from recycled plastic and bio plastic—plastic made from renewable sources).

Cloth diapers have lots to offer

You’ll do more laundry with reusable/cloth diapers, and you’ll need to change diapers more often–every two hours to prevent leaks, diaper rash and irritation. The pay-off? Cloth/reusable diapers don’t make a dent in landfills because there’s no plastic to decompose. (FYI–disposable diapers occupy approximately 2 percent of landfill space, which doesn’t sound like so much, but still.) Cloth diapers can be a sizeable cost cutter, too. You’ll spend around $2500 on name brand disposables from birth to potty training. A moderately priced stash of reusables costs that’ll last you around $500—an 80 percent savings. You can save even more (and be even greener) by buying preowned cloth diapers. All told, cloth diapers are a lifestyle. If you’re not sure they’re for you, try them on the weekends, for starters.

You can feel good about eco-friendly, biodegradable diapers

If disposable diapers are more your thing, many are greener than ever and degrade quickly. Biodegradable disposable diapers take just one year to degrade, equal to the time it takes a piece of plywood to melt back into the Earth, according to the EPA. Biodegradable diapers typically use fewer resources to produce, contain organic cotton in the cover and be manufactured from renewable, plant-based materials, such as wood pulp, corn and wheat-derived filler, or seed oil to reduce the use of non-renewable petrochemicals and biodegrade faster. Research shows that Earth’s Best and Bambo Nature are also top eco-friendly performers.

Glass baby bottles are good for the environment and your baby

They’re naturally free of environmental contaminants that may be found in plastic baby bottles, such as BPS (a close cousin to BPA), phthalates, polycarbonates and PVC. See top baby bottle picks here.

Green Toys = eco-friendly fun
Green Toys Ferry Boat with Mini Cars Bathtub Toy, Blue/White, Standard

Made from recycled milk jugs and yogurt cups in the U.S., Green Toys are environmentally friendly and socially responsible children’s products made from recycled milk containers–right here in the USA (where manufacturers still have EPA environmental standards to adhere to). Green Toys designed to make minimal impact on the environment while making a big impression on your child. Green Toys are also packaged in recycled and recyclable materials with no plastic films or twist ties, and printed with soy ink, which degrades quickly, and each box is recyclable too. There are so many ways to feel good about Green Toys.

DaVinci cribs are Greenguard Gold Certified

Who knew your baby’s crib has its own “microclimate”? You’ll breathe easier knowing your baby is sleeping in a crib that won’t off gas. DaVinci offers Greenguard Gold certified cribs that are tested for over 10,000 chemicals to be deemed low-emitting and healthier for indoor environments.
